El joc queda inaugurat i hem de felicitar la nostra col•lega que pren el risc de fer encaixar un programa semblant al d’una ciutat en tres terrenys diferents en només 28 dies, a l’ombra de Barcelona, feta al llarg de 2000 anys.
Veiem. Es tracta d’una ciutat d’unes 600 hectàrees, que equival a l’àrea entre plaça Espanya i Glòries i entre plaça Universitat i plaça Francesc Macià, o, el que és el mateix, una referència lineal del projecte de l’arquitecte Nash a Londres, des del zoològic de Regents Park passant per Regent Street fins el riu Tàmesi.
Ens hem d’imaginar que la Generalitat ja ha fet un estudi d’enginyeria per cadascun dels tres terrenys pel que respecta al subministrament d’aigua, al tractament de les aigües residuals i possibles inundacions, i per altres aspectes i serveis que són essencials per obtenir el permís d’obra. Donada l’envergadura de l’operació, també s’haurà de tenir en compte el problema de transport dels materials de construcció dins una xarxa de trànsit ja de per sí molt atapeïda.
Com que l’àrea on es proposa instal•lar l’Eurovegas esdevindrà pràcticament en un estat autònom amb lleis i tributacions diferents, òbviament serà com una ciutat vigilada privadament amb controls que provocaran llargues cues de vehicles per entrar i sortir-hi, com si es tractés d’Andorra. Per cert, aquest nous “país” seria un lloc més prestigiós per a la companyia americana si també hi incorporessin un bisbe català que al mateix temps sigui príncep.
També hem de suposar que la Generalitat espera una resposta positiva de la nostra col•lega com a mínim per un dels tres terrenys. Però, ¿què passarà si la resposta és negativa?

Like many I have doubts about “Eurovegas” in the delta of the Llobregat within the metropolitan area of Barcelona. We know little about the conditions that the government of Catalonia is negotiating with the American company.
I feel uneasy about the size of the casino, but I am not against casinos. Risk is part of human life, and many casinos in France, Germany and Switzerland are housed in dignified building often set in an urban park which lend a certain respect.
My doubt and concern is that the form of the urban settlement may be both unreleated to the character of our 2000 year city and result in a “ghetto” that has arrived from outer space. In other words, as an architect, I am doubtful about the form of the whole settlement and the form of the proposed buildings.
I would like to think that these cultural considerations are also in the minds of the political establishment that we have elected, so, like others, I would like to be reassured.
It is known that the Generalitat is keen to demonstrate the benefits for employment, so, obviously, the first jobs to be offered will be for the architects from Barcelona, and around, for planning and designing the buildings to ensure that lessons from the slow changes of the past 2000 years, together with imagination for the uncertain future, will not be lost for the citizens of our city.
But I have my doubts.
